The packager is the best way to achieve what you want but requires manual work flow not automated. so I dont have to make copies of exref rev a rev b etc too hard to keep track. I use this on live drgs all the time between revision changes so I have an exact back up of Rev A before it became rev B the current new drawing. zip) at the time before any edits are done. IMHO There is a work flow use a better tool called packager ( under utilities) its like acad etrans and you use it to make in place backup and it can hunt down xrefs, raster etc and make exact duplicate in a Pzip ( you can edit extension on the fly to just. Open a file> run the F key> name the file as required ie date Filename.bak, then start changes in the live dgn file.
The simplest way is to have a Function key defined with the keyin to make the bak file to make a back up at any time its run so you change your work flow
IMHO personally I think having this level of automation is just too much effort. this would require you to create a vba that would run upon starting microstation and wait for you to select a drawing to open it would then need to run the create bak file and your workspace config would have the location for default bak defined. However what you are asking for can apply to Microstation to create an automated backup before you edit a drawing upon opening.
